New materials and technology affected later half of 19th century greatly. The display of the technology and new materials happened at Great exhibition of 1851 which lead to development of modern architecture.
The introduction of new building technique is used to construct the CRYSTAL palace for the London Great Exhibition by Joseph Paxton. More than 14,000 exhibitors from around the world gathered in the Palace's 990,000 square feet (92,000 m2) of exhibition space to display examples of the latest technology developed in the Industrial Revolution.The first prefabricated construction, which was a structural skeleton of cast iron measuring 49 feet 30 inches long . It held iron-framed glass panes which were supported by prefabricated wooden ribs and bars. The central vaulted transept rose 108 feet. And these all possible because of cast iron. Crystal Palace was technology marvel but people who favored Neoclassicism and Romanticism did not consider it has genuine architecture because it was not based upon any past style. It was considered as a work of engineering.

Art is always reflection of society. During the classical era art was used to depict the religious stories and convey message to illiterate people. Gradually it started changing and during the renaissance with rise of middle class the artist started getting commission not only from church but also from private patrons. Today normal people can also afford to have some art work in their homes. And artists are free to paint whatever they feel like. In today society we see art in different format. Here is the example of the art work which warns people for what is coming. This painting is about global warming. And it is creating perfect scenario for global warming. It is a major issue for everyone. In this painting the abstract from of object is used. even text is used to convey the messages. And the color scheme itself convey the warmth.

Baroque period

Most important and major painting during the period beginning around 1600 and continuing throughout the 17th century, and into the early 18th century is identified today as Baroque painting. Baroque period developed during Louie IV era.He was know has sun king. Baroque art is characterized by great drama, rich, deep color, and intense light and dark shadows. As opposed to Renaissance art, which usually showed the moment before an event took place, Baroque artists chose the most dramatic point, the moment when the action was occurring: Michelangelo, working in the High Renaissance, shows his David composed and still before he battles Goliath.
Bernini's baroque David is caught in the act of hurling the stone at the giant. Baroque art was meant to evoke emotion and passion instead of the calm rationality that had been prized during the Renaissance. Baroque painting often dramatizes scenes using chiaroscuro light effects. The effect of light and shadow.The Baroque architecture was grandeur and room sizes were big and very high ceiling. Furniture was also grandeur and big in proportion to human scale. Furniture was always placed against walls. All the chairs had stretchers and scrolled armrest. Everything was grandeur and massive scale and ornate. Baroque period was followed by Rococo era and during this time the room sizes were started getting smaller. Furniture became more appropriate to human scale. Ceiling were lowered in height and brought it down to human proportion

In 15 th century Brunelleschi invented the one point perspective and its mathematical order and it has a great impact on the painting of that era . After invention of one point perspective by Brunelleschi many other architect and painter follow his rule of one point perspective. Massaccio is one of them and his famous painting Trinity is great example of it. This painting shows great understanding of one point perspective. In 16th century Leonardo da vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael were three leading artists of high renaissance. They also used method of liner perspective in their fresco work. Michelngelo studied missacio’s frescoes and made sketches to understand his methods. On the other hand Leonardo da vinci used liner perspective in his most famous painting last supper. This way the liner perspective is used from 15th century till today. Even today we use perspective for visual presentation. Here is the example of person who does perspective on street and side walk with chalk.

This is the equestrian bronze sculpture of Paduan General of Venetian army (condottieri) Erasmo Da Narni (GATTAMELATA) made by Donatello in 1443-53. It is installed on a high marbal base in front of the church of Sant’ Antonio in Padua. If you want to characterize one image in Italian Renaissance then that would be self made condottieri. These condottieri had their own army and they fight for any state, any city whoever is paying them.

Donatello’s source of this sculpture was two Roman bronze equestrian portraits. He must have seen these two during his stay in Roam. Equestrian Monuments of ancient Roam demonstrate Emperor’s bravery, nobility and authority. The horse symbolized the passion and man’s physical animal nature. Horsemanship was very important skill to learn in past.

When you look at the sculpture closely, the man’s who is riding on horse has sunken cheeks, sagging jaw, ropy neck and stern but sad expression. These all expression suggests that warrior grown old and tired of constant need for military vigilance and rapid response.
Donatello was always appreciated for sculpting human emotions and expression in his work. And this equestrian sculpture is great example of it.

Week 2

This is the unicorn tapestry from fifteenth –century. This tapestry are used has wall hangings for royal and aristocratic patrons. The tapestry provides insulation and luxurious decoration for the stone walls of halls, churches and municipal buildings. The tapestry was woven with wool, silk, silver and gold threads. The richest tapestries were woven by silk and gold.
The tapestry showed here is from hunt of the unicorn series. “Unicorn found at the fountain”. The tapestry has rich colors, fine details of flowers, animals and foliage, tonal variation in the animal fur.
The tapestry has a mythical horse like animal the unicorn who could be captured only by virgin Christ is the unicorn and captured by Virgin Mary and that’s why he became the symbol of incarnation and romantic love.
In this tapestry the unicorn purify the water by dipping his horn in to the stream. This act resulting the capture and killing of unicorn which equate with christ’s death on the cross to save humanity.
All animals’ flowers and trees in tapestry have symbolic meanings. Like lion is a symbol of power, faith, courage and mercy. Same way trees and flowers are symbols of protective and curative powers.
So in fifteenth century the tapestries were found with subject matter of religious belief and mythological stories.

Visual Thoughts

This is the abstract painting created by artist name osnate tzadok . The name of the painting is Visual Thoughts. According to name it’s completely express the subject matter and the meaning in nonrepresentational way. The medium of the art is acrylic paint and color composition is very warm and vibrant.

This is one of my favorite pieces because it’s reflecting my thought process. Once I have some design problem. My mind will be full of thoughts and it’s like a roller coaster ride going on in my mind. It’s like flood of thoughts. And different thoughts mingle, entangle and mixed to gather. At the end I will come up with some solution which is the result of all brainstorming.

Sea Form

Chandelier

This is the work of glass artist Chahuly. I like his work and these pieces because of its vibrant colors and its abstract form. The first piece represents the sea form. The second piece is chandelier which has free flowing organic plant like form. Chahuly’s style of work shows his fascination for organic shapes from nature, vibrant colors and linier form. The medium for these pieces is glass.

These are the example of one stroke painting done by me. I love bright colors. The medium is acrylic paint on fabric.
